Through the Eyes of a Soldier

Santo "Sam" Fanizzi
Santo “Sam” Peter Fanizzi, circa. 1944

Santo P. Fanizzi was my great uncle.  He was drafted into the United States Army on June 27th, 1944 and was discharged on June 2nd, 1946.

During his service, he participated in military campaigns in Central Europe, Rhineland and Ardennes.  As a T3/T5 mechanic, he performed major maintenance and repair work on all types of vehicles.

Throughout the duration of his service, he carried with him a small portable camera and upon his passing, he left me the collection of the photos taken while on active duty.  Although many of these pictures had some wear, I thought they stood up pretty well considering. Each of the original images is 2″ x 3″.  I’ve compiled several of them in this short photographic essay (above).
