Random Rants Volunteering

Calling Volunteers …

On New Year’s Eve, a group of us agreed that we would each pick an organization or cause to support and then we would do some sort of volunteer service together as a group.  I didn’t know that this meant we needed to start “right away” but about two weeks ago we received our first request and on Saturday night, we completed the first of six outings at WCNY.

We decided to meet at our house for dinner before heading over for our shift.  Almost immediately, Steven was begging me to allow him to make his sauce and meatballs.  Of course, I couldn’t say no because he really does come closest to producing sauce like my grandmother used to make it.  So we decided on something light …. like lasagna, meatballs, sausage and pork.

Friday night, while we were playing cards, a group of us had a little “tasting” while the sauce simmered.  I could make a meal out of that sauce and loaf of fresh Italian bread.  Unfortunately,  the Italian bread Friday night looked like it was being saved for St. Patrick’s Day — it was that green.  Alright, it’s not Wegmans so I gratefully opted for “sandwich bread”.  Yeah, I know what you’re thinking, it’s not the same.  However, in the back of my mind, I knew our guests would be bringing bread the following evening.

When we arrived at WCNY, we were brought directly into a brief training session, in which we were given just a hand full of instructions and then we were brought out to the floor.  At this point, I was a little skeptical.  Lori, who selected this event, and Nancy both quickly volunteered to be “runners” instead of manning the phones.  This made me wonder a little bit …. But, with the exception of a few people who were hard to hear, I had a good time for a good cause.

The other group of volunteers that were working our shift were from Harley Davidson.  I got a kick out of one them turning to Bob, who was in a very nice sweater vest, and commented that they had very few “argyle vests in their group”.  I also loved Shannon’s reaction when she first saw herself on camera … you know how she loves to be in pictures …..

Around 11:30 when stopped back at the house for coffee and Shannon served up some frosted filled cupcakes with her usual style — beautiful and sweet.  A lot of laughs.  How often do you get to volunteer for a good cause where everyone gets “leid”?
